5 out of 5 stars Working in Office I Get My Work Done   June 9, 2009

Microsoft Office for the Mac 2008 contains Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage and is a must have program. Word is very intuitive and easy to use. I've written several letters in Word and have found it to be fast, though not as fast as that old (and I guess bare bones) software I'd been using. I do use Office for Windows on a Dell, so I really didn't have any problems at all with the Mac Version. The interface for the two programs is a bit different and I like the Mac version better, probably because I'm a Mac person at heart.

The Windows version of Office arranges the functions with tabs, however the Mac version puts the functions in drop down windows, but the templates and Smart Art Graphics are the same for both versions and that's convenient and I really like the My Day widget for Entourage that floats on top of the desktop. Having all my to do lists right there, that's convenient too. I really feel like I've taken a step into the new Millennium with this program.

Right off the bat there is a couple things you want to do right after you install Office for Mac 2008 and you can do them both in Office's preferences. One, you want to change the program so it's save your Word docs in, well, the .doc format, instead of Words new, not compatible with anything else format, docx. Second you want to set the prefs to get rid of that annoying as all get out Project Gallery. Go the the settings tab and uncheck the "Show Project Gallery at Startup" box. You'll be glad you did.

I guess I'm one of those rare people who really likes Vista, so I don't object at all to the Vista like icons which ride on top of the Word documents in the new interface, but if all that stuff on top of your document bothers you, don't worry, you can turn them all off as all of those commands can be accessed via the menu items or the tools palette.

Like the Vista version there is now a toolbox which is a separate window which has seven tools palettes in it which let you manage things like Fonts and Styles or Alignment and Numbering or Margins or Borders. And one thing I really like about this version of Word is how easy it is to add pictures. Just drag `em onto your document and there they are. What could be simpler. Okay, you could do that before, but heck, it's nifty as all get out. You can also use the object palette to add clip art and the program comes with lots of it.

Word also now has new layout modes which makes publishing a newsletter or making flyers for your local PTA event easy peasy.

This program is very, very Mac like which you'll see and appreciate once you open the preferences panel. Amazing, it looks just like and works just like the systems preferences. I know a lot of this might be hard for a lot of Apple fans to swallow (and I am an Apple fan), because many of them (us) view or have viewed Microsoft as the enemy and they'd (we'd) go searching for anything we could find to replace a Microsoft program. Well, I'm here to say you (we) don't have to do that anymore. Microsoft is no longer the enemy. It's true, Microsoft has become the Mac's new best friend.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Office 2004 and that's Really Saying Something   December 11, 2008

I don't understand, the people at CNET can say Office for the Mac 2008 doesn't have all the features that Office for Windows 2007 has. I don't agree. I use the Windows version at home and have the Mac version on three different computers. One at work now and a desktop (iMac) and a laptop (PowerBook G4) and to me the Mac version is every bit as robust and feature rich as the Windows version. I don't think Microsoft skimped a bit here, in fact I think they went all out.

In my opinion this is the best productivity software you can buy for the Mac, bar none. Sure, I suppose there are less costly ways to go to get a lot of the features here, but hey, you bought a Mac, so you've already paid a bit more than you'd pay for a Dell or an HP machine. I know, money is tight for a lot of people these days, but if you use your computer to earn a living, then this is a program that'll pay for itself. If you don't have Office on your Mac, you need it.

However, do you need it if you have the 2004 version. Maybe not. Seriously, the 2004 version does everything I want it to do and though it's not running natively on my Intel iMac, I'd swear you'd never know. The new (2008) version seems a little snappier, but not so much that I'd spring for the upgrade. Also the interface is gorgeous, much better than the 2004 version, but still, probably not worth the price of an upgrade.

I guess that's Microsoft's curse, they made the last version so doggone good, that you hate to leave it and leave it I did, because when you install the 2008 version it removes the earlier version. That kind of ticked me off at first, but I don't really need it anymore as the newer version is better. But, like I said, if you have the older version, you'll have to check the state of your wallet, before upgrading.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an Update! WooHoo!   September 24, 2009

I have been waiting for the new update of the Mac version of Office. I have tried other alternatives, and they just don't work the way I would expect them to. Having used Microsoft Office for the PC in the past for all of my office needs, I could not find anything that worked quite the same on my Mac. Printing would be off, or text would not look right, and just a lot of small things that made me feel that I needed to keep looking for the right program to edit spreadsheets and documents on my Mac.

Behold: Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac! This is the newest version of Office for the mac! The settings and options I am used to having are all there! Commands have the same name I am familiar with! Documents and text look the way I would expect them to when I create/edit them and even when I print them! I felt at home!

The menu system does take a bit of getting used to. Instead of being a traditional Menu Bar like Office 2003 (what I am familiar with) it has a style more like Office 2007 - but with the menus detached from the main document window. This takes a little getting used to, but actually is much better with my wide screen monitor. I still prefer the old Office 2003 style menus, but I would say these are a bit more useful then the ones present in Office 2007. Also, the update system can be annoying if you set it to always check for updates. I get a pop-up window every time, but would have preferred if it checked in the background and then just let me know when new updates were available.

Installation took a bit. Not too terribly slow, but it was a bit time consuming. All of this was well worth it though, as any Office program I run starts up very fast! I was impressed with the loading speeds. I expected fairly fast loading due to the major efforts put into the new Microsoft products to decrease loading times, but I still expected it to take a bit longer. Word or Excel load about as fast as Firefox or any other lean program! MUCH faster than an alternative I had been using previously.

After using alternatives, and having become accustomed to the PC version - I found Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac to be a wonderful and necessary software suite for all of my document needs. I would definitely recommend this program if you want a solid and fully featured Office program for your Mac!

5 out of 5 stars Everything is Good   December 9, 2008

A lot reviews that I see in software magazines start out by listing the good, then the bad parts about a program or an upgrade. I could do that here, but so far, and I'm a month or so into the program, I haven't discovered the bad. The program installed without a hitch on my G4 last generation PowerBook and likewise on my Intel iMac.

I can't compare Office 2008 to prior versions on the Mac because until now, I've been using a program called Nisus Writer which I've been using for years and years. It's a very nice program and does everything you'd want a word processor to do. Well, not quite everything. It's supposed to be able to open Word docs, and it does, but the headers and footers come out all messed up.

Not so with this program (be sure to set the prefs to save in doc format). With Word in Office 2008 I can view all the docs I get as attachments as they were meant to be seen. Also, I've been working almost exclusively with Word since I installed it on my machines to see how it compares with both Nisus and with Word 2007, which I have on my iMac running on
Windows in emulation via fusion.

I like the new interface. I like the easy of use, of course I'm not a novice. Just the fact that Microsoft put so much time and effort into this program makes me feel that the Mac is going to be around for a long time to come. After all, If Microsoft believes in the Mac, then it's bound to survive.
